What to Expect

This itinerary offers selected locations that Ceylon tea is cultivated and produced in Sri Lanka, however can be customized to suit your travel plans.

Day 1 : Route – Airport / Colombo

Drive Time – Approximately 15 minutes

Accommodation – Jetwing Blue

Arrive in Sri Lanka in the style you deserve, greeted by your chauffeur guide and transferred directly to Negombo where you can relax and unwind on one of the island’s world-class beaches.  Start your journey at a luxurious setting in our beachside accommodations to bask in the sun, splash in the water, and let the waves wash over your feet.

Stretch back in a hammock with a drink in your hand to shake off the jetlag and adjust to the new time zone. Watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean and marvel at its rich pinks and ambers while you wriggle your toes in the white sands of the beach and prepare yourself for the exciting immersion into the Ceylon tea culture that awaits you in the coming days.

Day 2 : Route – Negombo / Matugama

Drive Time – Approx. 2 hours

Journey south today, out from your beach oasis, and into the teeming tropical flora of the southern jungle surrounding Matugama to get your first taste of Sri Lankan tea culture.

Spend your day walking through the lush tea plantation and learn how the leaves are picked – as well as how the accompanying rubber trees are tapped. Set off on the surrounding nature trails and absorb your amazing surroundings. Spend the evening relaxing at your leisure.

Day 3 : Route – Matugama

Drive Time – Approx. 3 hours

Accommodation – The Ark

Meal Basis – Full Board

Awake on your third day and, after a delicious breakfast, spend the morning exploring the beautiful forty acres of private forest reserve surrounding your accommodations. You may wish to check out and ramble through the wonders of nearby Sinharaja Rain Forest.

In the afternoon take a dip in the pool or in the secluded, tranquil stream adjacent to The Ark. Spend your evening snapping pictures of your amazing sunset view and enjoying the songs of the birdlife.

Day 4 : Route – Matugama / Kandy

Drive Time – Approx. 2.5 hours

Accommodation – The Kandy House

Head back north today and further into the lush green jungle to Kandy – the Hill Capitol of Sri Lanka and the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kingdom. On your way, you’ll stop by the Ceylon Tea Museum in Hantane to get an introduction to Sri Lanka’s tea production. Located in a 1925 tea factory, the museum features exhibitions on luminary tea pioneers James Taylor and Thomas Lipton as well as offering insight into the machinations of vintage tea processing. Purchase some tea and peruse the grounds, which have been cleverly landscaped in different varieties of tea.

After your visit to the museum, continue to your hotel in Kandy, check-in, and enjoy a tour of the city.

Pay a visit to the Temple of the Tooth and join the Buddhists who, dressed all in white, offer puja while catching a glimpse of the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha.

Spend the evening in the city center, close to the temple, watching a performance of Traditional Kandyan Dance with its vibrantly colorful dancers and musicians. The Kandyan Dancers are as unforgettable as they are iconic.

Day 5 : Route – Kandy / Nuwara Eliya

After an early breakfast, today you will travel up the verdant green hills that surround Kandy and venture further into Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and magic region – the Hill Country – where the best tea in Sri Lanka is produced.

But before you leave, stop by the Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, outside of Kandy, for some tea history. Peradeniya is the birthplace of Ceylon Tea, where the first plants were brought from China in 1824. Twenty-eight years later, Scottish planter James Taylor established the first seedlings on an eight hectare plantation at the Loolecondera Estate between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. It was the success of his plantation there that led to Nuwara Eliya becoming the epicenter of the Sri Lankan tea industry.

With its cool air, magnificent waterfalls, and thriving tea culture, the enchanting allure of these hills has to be seen to believe. The drive to Sri Lanka’s “Little England” is a highlight of any trip to Sri Lanka. You will take winding roads through the gorgeously lush plantations past tea bushes trimmed by regular picking that look like green sculptures stretching up and down the misty hills as far as the eye can see. Enjoy your journey – this is the complete experience.

Arrive in Nuwara Eliya and continue to your hotel to check-in. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure with a cup of tea in your hand, enjoying your surroundings and the pleasant change in temperature.

Day 6 : Route – Nuwara Eliya

Today you will meet tea connoisseur, planter, and former Chairman of The Tea Exporters Association, Mr. Niraj de Mel. Mr. de Mel will guide you through the rolling plantations of the central highlands and instruct you on the fine art and intricacies of the Sri Lankan tea business.

A free afternoon here gives you the perfect opportunity to play a round of golf, visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, or just stroll through the unbelievably beautiful plantations. Stop by a factory to sample Ceylon’s finest. Nuwara Eliya is another destination best explored on foot to take in its charm and ambiance.

Day 7 : Route – Nuwara Eliya / Colombo

Drive Time – Approx. 6.5 hours

Accommodation – The Kingsbury

Meal Basis – Bed and Breakfast

Now, having seen first-hand the beautiful conditions under which the tea is grown and produced, you will be ready to move on to the island’s urban center of Colombo where you can explore its trade and export. Head north to Colombo to see some of its exotic sites and enjoy its frenetic energy.

On arrival in Colombo, take your time to check-in to your hotel and get settled in. Once you’ve caught your breath, you may wish to explore the wonders of Colombo, its unique historical sites, and, maybe do a little shopping.

This morning gain special insight into the tea industry by accompanying Mr. de Mel to the Colombo Tea Auction. The largest of its kind in the world, The Colombo Tea Auction has been conducted twice a week at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce since 1883. Be a part of the action while roughly 700 tea factories trade with over 450 registered buyers.

If you’ve missed any details about Ceylon Tea and its production over the past week, let Mr. de Mel fill in the blanks by attending his Colombo Tea Academy after the auction. You’ll be an expert by day’s end with a certificate to prove it.

After a busy afternoon taking in Colombo’s colonial charm and tea life, retire to your accommodations or have a luxurious dinner out on the town. Reflect on your time in Sri Lanka by watching the sunset over the palm lined tropical landscape one last time – a cup of tea in hand!

Day 9 : Route – Colombo / Airport

Drive Time – Approx. 30 minutes

Though it will be difficult to say goodbye, all good things come to an end. Your representative from Jetwing Travels will meet you on time at the hotel lobby to return you by way of a scenic drive to the international airport for your departing flight and a safe journey home.
