The Lake House

What is it Really like?

Built in 1870 as a circuit bungalow for British Government Agents, the Old Polonnaruwa Rest House and once the Queen of England’s holiday destination in the 1950’s, has been restored and now named as The Lake House Polonnaruwa. The Lake House overlooks the panoramic Sea of Parakrama and offers a magnificent view of the historic centre of Polonnaruwa’s UNESCO World Heritage site, of Kingdoms past.

The Lake House Polonnaruwa restored to a charming deluxe boutique hotel reflects Sri Lanka’s distinguished heritage. It is an intimate 14 roomed hotel in a welcoming environment evoking a beautiful harmonious living space.

Where is it?

As the Lonely Planet states “Perched over the Sea of Parakrama, this heritage rest house has some of the best views in town. Built in the early 1950s specifically for a visit by Queen Elizabeth II, the hotel has been a local landmark ever since. The languor that comes from sitting on the verandah or having a meal in the glassed-in dining room is the epitome of the Old Polonnaruwa Rest House.
