Today journey south today out of the arid dry-lands and up into the lush green jungles of Kandy;  the Hill Capitol of Sri Lanka and the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kingdom.  Some days Kandy’s skies seem forever bruised, with mist clinging to the mountains surrounding the city’s beautiful central lake. Gentle hill-country breezes compel the mist to softly part, revealing vibrant houses amid Kandy’s forested aura.

When passing Matale do not forget to stop at Nalanda Gedige an ancient and mysterious edifice that has confounded researchers with its strange mix of Hindu and Buddhist architecture. It is believed to be at least a thousand years old. You can also enjoy a simple lunch at a spice garden with premium spices.

The gold-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth holds Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist artifact – a tooth of Lord Buddha. During ‘puja’ (offerings or prayers), the protected chamber housing the same is open to worshipers and visitors.

In Sri Lanka, that hoary old cliché about the journey being better than the destination is actually true. During the drive, relish the endless views of tea carpeted valleys and the bright flash of female “tea pluckers” in their pimento, fuchsia and cerise saris. Pass cascading waterfalls of Ramboda and Garadiya, lakes and sweet smelling mountain air!

En route, do drop by a tea factory where the process of tea producing and grading will be explained. You will also be able to taste a cup of pure Ceylon tea here.

Listen to the elephants trumpet, monkeys chatter, sloth bear grunts and the melodious bird song from the verdant woods. Watch out! There’s plenty more to stop you on your tracks and let your heart pound faster.

Enjoy a relaxed afternoon by the beautiful stretch of untouched, secluded beachfront near your motor home park.

After the safari you can refresh yourself and then drive along the south coast to Tangalle. Tangalla is the gateway to the wide-open spaces and wide-open beaches of southeast Sri Lanka. It’s the last town of any size before Hambantota and has some old-world charm. But you’re really here to find your perfect beach, and there are several nearby.

Enjoy the beaches and have a dip in the nearby ones whilst soaking up some serious sun. You can also visit the nearby beaches such as in Mirissa, Hiriketiya, Dalawalla and Unawatuna. From travelling along the coastal highway through to the countryside, our motorhome road trip will really give you the best of both worlds!

The Fort remains a hive of activity and is one of the few World Heritage sites in which a bustling population continues to thrive. Walk through the alleys lined with stores and restaurants. After you have explored the city you could proceed to do some shopping in the very heart of Galle from a fine variety of gems and jewelries, antiques, art galleries and Design stores etc.

You can also visit the fresh fish, vegetable and fruit markets as per your fancy and talk to the vendors there whilst sampling some goods. Also try not to miss watching the sunset from the fort walls over the Indian Ocean. It’s a festive and happy affair; cricket games are played on the grass below, whole families gather to see off the last of the day, and travelers mingle and chat while Mother Nature streaks the sky all kinds of shades of blue, orange, pink and purple. It is definitely not to be missed and a perfect way to say goodbye Lankan fashion!
