Bopath Ella (meaning “Bo leaf waterfall”) is a rare combination of natural beauty and cultural storytelling. Found near Kuruwita, about 3 hours from Colombo, it gets its name from its distinctive shape, broad at the top and tapering down like the sacred fig leaf associated with Buddhism.
The waterfall plunges nearly 30 meters into a wide pool below, surrounded by rocky banks and dense forest. It’s a favourite weekend getaway for locals who come to picnic, bathe and spend time by the falls. While easily reachable, the area retains a village charm, with small food stalls and souvenir vendors lining the entrance.
But it’s the mythology that adds extra depth, folklore tells of a heartbroken village girl who leapt to her death here and some claim her spirit still lingers near the water, making Bopath Ella a place of mystery and reverence.
While it can get busy on holidays, visiting on a weekday morning offers a more peaceful experience. Sri Lanka Tailor-Made recommends Bopath Ella to those interested in accessible nature, local culture and legend rich landscapes. It’s not just a waterfall, it’s a story waiting to be heard.
