The Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary, located just off Kalpitiya on Sri Lanka’s northwest coast, is a marine biodiversity treasure. Spanning over 300 square kilometers, it is Sri Lanka’s largest reef system, home to over 100 coral species and 300 species of tropical fish. Thanks to its shallow depth and excellent visibility, Bar Reef is ideal for first time snorkellers, families and eco-conscious divers.
Expect to encounter parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and even hawksbill turtles and blacktip reef sharks, all swimming among vibrant coral beds. The reef’s relatively undisturbed state makes it a living showcase of healthy marine ecosystems, rare in many parts of the world.
Boat trips typically depart from Kalpitiya and take around 30 to 45 minutes to reach the reef. Best visited between March and October, the water is clear, currents are manageable and wildlife encounters are frequent. Strict conservation protocols help protect the reef, so no touching or stepping on corals is permitted and only licensed operators are allowed.
