Located just steps from the beach, Hikkaduwa’s Coral Sanctuary is one of Sri Lanka’s most accessible snorkelling spots. With shallow waters, abundant coral beds and resident sea turtles, it’s perfect for beginners and families. A protected marine park, the area teems with reef fish and colourful coral, offering an easy and magical introduction to the island’s marine world.
Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, just off the main beach in Hikkaduwa town, is Sri Lanka’s most popular and beginner friendly snorkelling destination. What makes it magical is how easily accessible it is, just walk into the water from the shore and within minutes, you will be floating above vibrant coral beds alive with reef fish.
This protected marine park is home to over 60 species of hard and soft corals and an even greater variety of fish including parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish and the much loved clownfish. But the real highlight is the chance to snorkel with wild sea turtles, which often swim gracefully among visitors, completely unfazed by your presence.
Ideal for kids, casual travellers and those new to the underwater world, the sanctuary is best explored early morning when waters are calmest and visibility is high. Snorkelling gear is available at rental shops along the beach and glass bottom boat rides offer a dry alternative for non swimmers.
Sri Lanka Tailor-Made recommends Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary for those who want a low effort, high reward marine experience. It’s proof that you don’t need to go deep to find wonder, sometimes, magic is just beneath the surface.
