Kaudulla National Park is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to witness wild elephants in large numbers, especially between August and October. This less crowded alternative to Minneriya offers tranquil jeep safaris, wide grassy plains and incredible elephant interactions in their natural habitat, making it a must visit for nature lovers and wildlife photographers.
Kaudulla National Park, located just north of Habarana, offers one of Sri Lanka’s most awe inspiring natural spectacles, large wild elephant gatherings in a serene, lake fringed landscape. While its neighbour, Minneriya, attracts more attention, Kaudulla provides a quieter, equally thrilling safari for those in the know.
During the dry months from August to October, elephants migrate to Kaudulla’s reservoir in search of water and fresh grass. On a single game drive, it’s common to see dozens, sometimes hundreds of elephants, including playful calves, older matriarchs and large solitary bulls. The wide, open plains allow for unobstructed views and stunning photography, particularly during golden hour safaris.
Kaudulla is also home to sambar deer, wild boar, crocodiles and over 160 bird species, making it a great spot for birdwatchers and wildlife generalists alike. With fewer safari jeeps on the tracks, it’s also more tranquil and less commercialized than some of Sri Lanka’s larger parks.
Sri Lanka Tailor-Made recommends Kaudulla for travellers looking to experience authentic elephant encounters in a relaxed setting. It’s perfect for families, couples and photographers wanting that rare moment when a herd of giants crosses the horizon and you are the only one watching.
