Minneriya National Park covers 8,890 hectares in Sri Lanka’s north central province. At its heart lies the Minneriya Tank, built in the 3rd century by King Mahasena, which still sustains wildlife today. During the dry season, receding waters expose lush grasslands, attracting herds of elephants in an annual phenomenon known simply as “The Gathering.” Between July and September, up to 300 elephants assemble here, grazing, socializing and playing, one of the world’s most remarkable natural events.
Beyond elephants, Minneriya supports diverse species. Leopards, sloth bears and spotted deer roam its scrub and forest patches. The park is also home to purple faced langurs, toque macaques and over 170 bird species, from painted storks to endemic Sri Lanka grey hornbills. Reptiles and amphibians thrive in wetlands, highlighting the park’s ecological importance.
Minneriya’s setting adds cultural depth. Situated within Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, it’s easily combined with visits to Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa or Dambulla. Safaris here are accessible yet unforgettable, with jeep trails winding along reservoir banks and grasslands.
