Kandy
Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, is famed for its sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most venerated sites. Surrounded by scenic hills and a serene lake, the city is a vibrant blend of spiritual devotion, colonial charm and traditional arts, hosting the world renowned Esala Perahera festival each year.
The Sacred City of Kandy is a jewel of Sri Lanka’s cultural and religious identity. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, Kandy was the final stronghold of Sri Lankan kings before British colonisation. At its heart lies the Sri Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses a revered relic believed to be a tooth of the Buddha.
The temple complex, with its gilded roofs, intricate carvings and tranquil courtyards, draws pilgrims from across the Buddhist world. Every July or August, the city bursts into vibrant celebration during the Esala Perahera, a grand procession of dancers, drummers and elaborately decorated elephants honouring the sacred relic.
Beyond its religious importance, Kandy offers stunning natural beauty, from the calm waters of Kandy Lake to the lush Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Colonial era buildings, traditional Kandyan dance performances and artisan workshops reflect the city’s rich heritage.
Kandy’s highland location keeps it cooler than much of the island, making it an inviting retreat. Whether you seek spiritual insight, cultural immersion or simply a scenic escape, Kandy captures the essence of Sri Lanka’s timeless traditions in an unforgettable setting.
