The Ancient City of Sigiriya is a masterpiece of ancient urban planning, artistry and engineering. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, this 200 metre high granite monolith was transformed in the 5th century by King Kasyapa into his fortified palace and royal gardens.

At the base, symmetrical water gardens, moats and terraces showcase advanced hydraulic systems far ahead of their time. Midway up, visitors encounter the world famous frescoes, sensuous yet refined depictions of celestial maidens, painted with natural pigments that have endured for over 1,500 years. Just above, the Mirror Wall, once polished to a reflective sheen, still bears ancient graffiti from admiring visitors.

The climb to the summit passes through the Lion’s Gate, marked by massive carved paws. At the top, the ruins of the king’s palace command panoramic views across forests, lakes and distant mountains.
