St. Clair’s Falls, near Talawakele, is one of the most photogenic and romantic waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Known as the “Little Niagara”, it spans two side by side cascades, ‘Maha Ella’ (Greater Fall) and ‘Kuda Ella’ (Lesser Fall), gently tumbling through a landscape of rolling tea covered hills.
Standing at around 80 meters high and 50 meters wide, the falls are best viewed after the monsoon, when their flow is full and lively. You can catch breathtaking views right from the A7 highway or from specially built viewpoints where tea stalls and local vendors serve warm snacks and Ceylon tea.
The backdrop is as stunning as the waterfall itself. This region is central to Sri Lanka’s tea heritage and the contrast of emerald fields, silvery water and mist laced hills makes it a magnet for photographers and honeymooners alike. It’s often paired with a stop at Devon Falls, located just minutes away.
Sri Lanka Tailor-Made recommends St. Clair’s Falls to leisure travellers, couples and photography enthusiasts. It’s a place to pause, breathe in mountain air and feel the rhythm of nature in one of the most beautiful corners of the highlands.
