Spend a Day with Gentle Giants in Sri Lanka

Spend a day with The Elephant Freedom project, where they provide a safe haven for privately owned elephants.

Located near Pinnawala, this sanctuary is a home for elephants that can’t go back to the wild as they need a lot of care and support. You can spend the entire day with the elephants, and at the same time take part in the community projects organised by the team including spending time with the local school children, visit the disabled home, the dung factory, tea factory, visit the temple, and waterfalls and also, spend time learning and cultivating the local organic garden.

A typical day at the sanctuary can include a safety talk, walk with the elephants, a cooking lesson, and washing of the elephants too. The scrumptious lunch could be cooked on your own with the help of the locals.

A special note from the project states that the elephants are not abused, and an enclosure is built so that the elephants don’t need to be chained. The elephants are given access to the mud and dust baths and plenty of freedom in this exciting home for elephants.
